What does this even mean? If you look Sovereign up in the dictionary it will define it as “a monarch”, “king”, “queen”, “a supreme ruler”,  and “supreme power or authority”. So what does this mean when it applies to God? What does God is Sovereign have to do with all mankind?

God Stands Alone

Job 23:13 But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases. He can do whatever he wants to. God created the universe because he made a choice to do it. Also let me make this point God did not become better or happier because he created the universe. Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. God is in control!

Well did he give us free will?

YES, in his sovereignty he did. Another words God chose to give you free will.

If I obey Him do I get more of the blessing of God?

YES, God in his sovereignty made it that way! God chose for it to be that way.

Why did God make me?

God didn’t make you because he had to. He didn’t make you because he needed to. He made you because it gave hime good pleasure to do so. You bring pleasure to God! Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

God is self-sufficient needing nothing outside of himself. God created all but is in depended of all. He created everything but didn’t need them. Heb 11:34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? God didn’t create knowledge to be taught, he created knowledge to teach. God is not a taking God, he is a giving God. God created things so he could give them away and that gives him pleasure. 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. God created things to give them away and that brings him pleasure.

I want to give you some keys to overcoming bitterness. No one wakes up and says, “Today I just want to be bitter”. It tends to sneak up on us. If we are not overcoming bitterness in our lives it will take root and rob us of our our joy.

When a person is no longer overcoming bitterness, but giving into it, they are no longer led by love they begin to operate in hate. They begin to operate in cruelty. They begin to have cruel thoughts and their words are cruel. It can turn it to revenge and competition. Bitterness brings in confusion. They begin to deceive their selfs. They begin to be hypocritical and jealousy sets in.

What happens when you place something bitter in your mouth? The first reaction is to spit it out! This is the proper response to bitter things that are in your life. When bitterness tries to take hold in your life. You must get rid of it!

I have had people tell me that they can’t. That I don’t know or understand what they have been through or what has been done to them. I do not want to down play the pain that people have been through. I understand that life can be hard. That there are people who have hurt us. People who should have protected us ended up hurting us.

We have all faced bitterness. Why is it that people can face the same problems and one will being to overcome bitterness and the other will become bitter.

Steps to get out of bitterness:

1. Recognize it as a sin. Isaiah 38:17 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
2. Uproot it! Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

How do you up root it? You must be diligent to watch over it!

1. Get rid of it! Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God (how do we grieve him? Sin), whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. 

If you tell me you can’t get rid of bitterness you are arguing against the word of God! I can’t get rid of it! YES YOU CAN. How? Be kind, tenderhearted, forgive because God has done it for you!

Offenses are normally a surprise. It contradicts your perception of a person and challenges your confidence in them. I would like to start off by asking you a question. How many of you have had someone in the body of Christ turn their back on you? I believe that would include everyone reading this!

Their are real offenses and then there are perceived offenses. I believe most offenses are perceived and are not real. Either the person was in a bad mode that offended you, they didn’t mean to offend you, or you just took it the wrong way.

Now there are real offenses. I have had people turn on Jessie and I maliciously. One moment people have your back then they seem to turn theirs. You have one image of them and then you see a different side and it has hurt us. It can be a very difficult thing to get ride of those offenses. You can not stop offenses from coming, but the great thing is that you just don’t have to accept them when they knock on the door.

There is a progress to offenses:

1.  You become critical and self-righteous.

- You begin to think higher of yourself and look down on others.

2.   You Lose your Joy.

- The longer you hold on to an offense the more joy you lose. No longer do you enjoy coming to church. What you use to find joy in you have become critical of. You use to think on things that were lovely and of good report and now you are critical of people and the church that God has called you to.

3.  You lose your true perception.

- Offenses are like glasses. You put them on and you see everyone and everything through your offenses. Your imagination runs wild and you just begin to think other people are against you.

4.  It hinders your production.

- Offenses will cause you to lose focus. Offenses demands to be in the forefront.

Let’s make sure that we keep focus on all that God has called us to do. Let go of offenses. Yes you have every right in the natural to be offended. Let us accepted God’s supernatural abilities and let go of offenses!

The bible tells us that it is an honor for us to let go of offense (Ps 20:3). Its us who have to let it go. We take the first step and God will help and be with us every step of the way! We must allow forgiveness to rule in our lives.

1. Do More Than Your Job Description

Colossians 3:23 And whosever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; When you do your job for the Lord you do it with everything in you.

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Every thing you do, you can do it in the power of the Lord and give him thanks through out the day. You might say,  “You don’t know my job and what I have to put up with”.  You are right I don’t, but if all you can be thankful for is that you have a job then thank God for that reason. You can work with a good attitude!

2. Help Others Succeed

Philip 2:4 Don’t be concerned only about your own interests, but also be concerned about the interests of others. 5 Have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. (God’s Word Translation)

This is what a leader does! They have enough self-confidence to help other reach their potential. The more opportunities you create for others, the more the door will open for you. The world has a word for this it’s called networking and aligning yourself with the right people. You should be building mutually rewarding relationships where everyone wins.

3. Keep a Submissive Heart

1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Now this is not just talking about age. It’s talking about maturity. I have met some 17 year old adults and some 50 year old children. I have come to realize that years may not add maturity to a person.

Mat 8:9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Where you are doesn’t determine your future. Your attitude of where you are now can determine your future.

When Peter was focused on Jesus he began to walk on water. Peter began to walk on what sank boats. It has swallowed ship and planes have disappeared in it. It has killed countless numbers of people. Others may be sinking and swallowed alive at your work place, but keep your eyes on the Lord Jesus. Keep your eyes on his promises, keep your eyes on his Spirit. You will walk on what has destroyed others.
